Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple

The Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka and a sacred centre of Buddhist worship for over two thousand years. Dating back to the 1st century B.C., the complex consists of five main caves adorned with numerous Buddha statues and extensive mural paintings that reflect continuous royal patronage and deep religious devotion. The paintings and sculptures illustrate the evolution of Buddhist art across centuries, combining spiritual expression with artistic excellence. Dambulla remains a living religious site where rituals and traditions continue uninterrupted, embodying the close relationship between faith, art, and history. Its enduring spiritual significance and exceptional artistic heritage contribute to its outstanding universal value.
