Documents Connected with the Panadura Vadaya (The Great Debate of Panadura) in 1873

The four documentary heritage items preserved at Rankot Viharaya Buddhist temple in Panadura, Sri Lanka, were created in 1873 during a period of significant religious tension between Buddhist and Christian communities in the mid-19th century. These documents hold exceptional historical, cultural, spiritual, and intellectual value of global importance. They consist of written correspondence between leading Buddhist and Christian figures calling for an open public dialogue on doctrinal issues, as well as the complete handwritten transcription of the dialogue, spanning 27½ pages in ink on paper.

This historic dialogue enabled both religious communities to clarify beliefs, eliminate misunderstandings, and engage in respectful intellectual exchange, leading to reconciliation and mutual respect for at least three decades thereafter. The English translations of the dialogue, later circulated in Europe and the United States, significantly influenced religious scholars and activists, contributing to the recognition of Buddhism as a philosophically advanced religion.
