Communication and Information

The Communication and Information sector of UNESCO plays a vital role in strengthening free, inclusive and trustworthy information environments that support democratic societies and sustainable development. It promotes freedom of expression and access to information as fundamental human rights, while encouraging the growth of independent, diverse and professional media systems. A key focus of the sector is enhancing the safety, capacity and ethical standards of journalists, enabling them to work in a secure and responsible manner.

The sector also advances media and information literacy, empowering citizens to critically access, evaluate and use information in an increasingly digital world. By addressing digital divides, it supports inclusive access to information and communication technologies, ensuring that no one is left behind. In addition, UNESCO’s work in this sector contributes to the development of knowledge societies through the responsible and ethical use of digital and emerging technologies, fostering informed participation, social dialogue and cultural understanding at national and global levels.
