Traditional craftsmanship of making Dumbara Rata Kalala

The traditional craftsmanship of making Dumbara Rata Kalala (Dumbara mats) in Sri Lanka was inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These hand-woven mats, produced mainly in Kalasirigama and Alokagama villages by the Kinnara community, are used as wall hangings, tapestries, and cushion covers. Historically, they were crafted for royal palaces and ruling elites. The mats are made from hana plant fibres, which are cleaned, dried, combed, and dyed using natural herbal dyes from the Dumbara Valley. Weaving is done on a loom, with motifs carefully inserted using a wooden lath. Rich in symbolic designs, Dumbara mats represent Sri Lanka’s cultural identity, and the knowledge of this craft is passed down through generations by observation and practice.
