Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO promotes international cooperation in ocean science, ocean observations, tsunami warning systems, and marine services to better understand the ocean and support sustainable ocean management. “The ocean, which sustains life on Earth by covering 70% of the planet and absorbing significant carbon dioxide, is increasingly threatened by climate change, and UNESCO works to address these challenges through science, conservation, resource management, heritage protection, and education”. UNESCOO is leading the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
